HARARE
Harare is the modern cosmopolitan capital city with a vibrant cultural scene and all the amenities which that implies. The centre is laid out in a grid pattern, easy to explore on foot. Gleaming high-rise hotels and banks are softened at street level by the lilac blossoms of feathery jacaranda in spring and the red flame trees of summer
Top visitor attractions include the National Gallery with its stunning collections of pan-African art and contemporary Shona stone sculptures, the National Botanic Gardens and the famous market at Mbare. Crowded with small shops, the downtown Kopje is a distinctly Africanised quarter, alive day-long with the sound of traditional music. It lies below the green hillock (kopje) which has panoramic views across Harare. The newly formed Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA) is held every April bringing top international and local performers together for a week of pure entertainment.
Within easy reach of the capital are wildlife attractions at the Lion and Cheetah Park, Larvon Bird Gardens and the Snake Park. Of more human-orientated appeal there is Chapungu Cultural Village or the Museum of Human Sciences. Botanists and gardeners will find much appeal at Ewanrigg Botanical Gardens and Mukuvisi Woodlands while amateur geologists can wonder at the Epworth Balancing Rocks. Attractions like these, plus first-class shopping, gourmet restaurants, a vigorous nightlife and outdoor activities - championship golf, cricket, sailing and water-skiing out at Lake Chivero - have put Harare on the international conference circuit and are a magnet for tourists. |
